Press Release
Nicelle Beauchene Gallery is pleased to present Smuggling the Sun, the first New York solo exhibition by Los Angeles based artist Eamon Ore-Giron.
Using a vocabulary that consists of basic and geometric forms, Ore-Giron generates a pictorial language to eliminate the vestiges of representational imagery. His intimately scaled paintings reference a meticulous approach to the handmade, using a combination of raw linen and a palette rooted in tones of red and orange to lend an intrinsically organic feeling to his otherwise minimal compositions. Notably influenced by the Latin American traditions of Geometric Abstraction, including but not limited to Kinetic Abstraction, Neo-Constructivism, and Constructivism, Ore-Giron explores the inherent flatness of pictorial space in compositions influenced by important art historical predecessors like Carmen Herrera, Lothar Charoux, Jean Arp and Maria Freire to name a few.
Likening the return to elemental abstraction to the revisiting of acoustic instruments from electronically generated sound, Ore-Giron references ethnomusicology as a conceptual influence. OPEN TUNING EDGBDG, the only sculptural work in the exhibition, marks the Peruvian Yaravi genre of music as a reference point. The practice of Open Tuning is associated with folk music traditions in a diverse range of cultures, from Mississippi Blues to Hawaiian Slack Key, and reflects on the artist’s interest in the relationship between music and locale.
Eamon Ore-Giron received his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2006. He has exhibited at Deitch Projects, New York; MUCA ROMA, Mexico City; Museo Rufino Tamayo, Mexico City; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; The Green Gallery, Milwaukee; Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; Pepin Moore Gallery, Los Angeles; and Queens Nails Annex, San Francisco.
